The Mould Project

As Senior Change Trainer at Kāinga Ora, I was assigned to the Mould project, responsible for training more than 500 Housing Support Workers across Aotearoa in the use of a new Mould Inspection App. With strong organisation‑wide interest, I ran online forums and demonstrations, created a one‑page training plan, and developed a SharePoint hub with FAQs and awareness videos that I filmed and edited, linking the mahi back to organisational values. After consultation, I designed the practical training materials, trained two additional trainers, and together we delivered 42 face‑to‑face workshops across the motu, plus three online mop‑up sessions. The training was rated 8.44/10, with learners reporting 87% confidence to apply their learning, exceeding the success measures set by the leadership team. To support ongoing learning, I created an Articulate Rise module with exemplars and worked with the team on a plan for reporting back results and supporting team leads to reinforce app use in weekly meetings.

One of the biggest learnings for me in this project was the importance of addressing the challenges that the learners had with the solution up front. I asked questions very early in the process to identify what these were (time, technology, workload), and I was able to build in activities that supported these challenges and encouraged the learners to find solutions that worked for them individually. One of the innovations of the training was to set up the training room as a fake house with images of mould so that learners could practise using the app. It was not only relevant for learning and a way of assessing, but it was also genuinely engaging and fun.

Throughout the project I managed tasks, risks and priorities across multiple workstreams, collaborating with subject matter experts, leaders, business analysts and learners. Although the solution was technology‑based, the mahi was values‑led: ensuring customers live in warm, dry and healthy homes.
